Lessons in business continuity from Hurricane Sandy
In the fall months, the Caribbean is a hurricane factory. One year ago today, a pressure ridge near Jamaica was blocking the movement north of a series of thunderstorms 70 miles south of Jamaica.
This ridge to the north combined with a lack of wind shear held the storms in the warm Caribbean waters, allowing them time to become “organized.” An organized tropical depression begins to take on a very familiar counter-clockwise motion in the Northern Hemisphere.
Because of that organization, the National Hurricane Center named the growing storm Tropical Depression Eighteen.
That was the beginning of a storm that will be remembered forever in the tri-state area. But did we learn any important lessons? In particular, are our companies, municipalities, and organizations more prepared?
